Have you seen a patchwork quilt recently? They used to be all the rage, but like the traditional ‘nuclear family’ of mum, dad and 2.2 kids, they seem to have gone out of fashion.
That colourful mix of individual pieces stitched together, sometimes quite haphazardly, always used to create a cosy, appealing and totally comfortable cocoon to wrap yourself up in.
It’s a great analogy for the family structure that so many people are now familiar with: by the time so many of us reach mid life, for whatever reason, you might now have children with one spouse and perhaps another child living with an ex – perhaps then, or now, you’re not married. Or you might have children from whom you’re estranged, as you now have a husband or wife who isn’t their parent.
There’s no doubt life is complicated, just like the patchwork pattern. Right now, your patchwork pattern might seem secure. What you don’t want is for everything to unravel if something unexpected happens. At a time when people are at their most raw, fragile and stressed – perhaps after a bereavement – it’s essential that what you want for them is clear.
And the best and only way to...

Do You Have Power Of Attorney For Your Parents? Perhaps it’s a new term to you, and you’re wondering what this ‘power’ is all about. Perhaps you think you understand what it means, but don’t see how it could be relevant to you?

As a Willwriter the amount of conversations I have with clients about not wanting a burial because no one in the family is prepared to look after the plot for generations to come.
Perhaps it’s because families move away, some drift apart and some just don’t know where previous generations...

When you are over the age of 12 in Scotland.

OK so not many takers at that age although I do have two young clients that did just that, another story for another blog.

Anyway, a call from a young man of 19.  He had just moved into his first property, got...

Yesterday afternoon I gave a talk on the hazards and pitfalls of not having a will in place and the way the law dictated who gets what if you don't.
My group of ladies went very quiet and attentive and listened before asking some very pertinent and searching questions! I...

Perhaps you wrote your will years ago and although you know it needs updating you think you’ll leave it for a while as you can’t afford it and don’t feel you are going to die yet!
Its scary, but understandable, that people put it off till tomorrow, especially if there...

So you need to be in Scotland to use the services of a professional willwriter?
Far from it.  I am currently working with two sets of clients in Denmark (totally unrelated) and clients in Cyprus who have assets in Scotland that they need to sort out.  Although we always have at...
